Along with the 6x6 paper pads I purchased during a recent Echo Park sale I also purchased a couple collection kits. As I was putting them away I came across the Let's Be Mermaids kit. While I like all the bright colors it's not my usual style. I had purchased it specifically to make cards to donate to the Cards for Soldiers program. "Kid" cards are very popular.
The first card uses a bright pink shell print for the background and a fun sea creature print for the focal panel. For the strip running down the card I used bright green glitter cardstock from DCWV. I don't typically use glitter paper but this paper doesn't "shed". A simple "hello" sentiment and a few pink sequins completed the card.
The next card uses a blue fish scale or wave print for the background. I used more of the glitter cardstock for the vertical panel, this time in a light blue color. The focal panel is a mermaid print. When cutting the panel I tried not to slice off too much of any mermaid.
As usual, I made several of each card. For each card I changed the placement of the fishtail banner and sequins so that no mermaids were covered.
For the third card I decided to switch it up and go with more of a "boy" feel to the card - no pink, mermaids or glitter. The background is white cardstock with stitched diagonal stripes created with a cover plate die. Two of the panels were cut from a blue tone-on-tone wave print. The focal panel is an all-over whale print. After digging through my stash I found the "Have a Whale of a time" sentiment stamp. For a bit of texture I added 3 blue sequins to the focal panel.
After making several of each card I was ready to move on. There is still plenty of paper and stickers (which I didn't even use) in the collection kit. The Let's Be Mermaids collection kit is a fun kit and works great for kid cards. But, when the paper isn't my style I find it's best just to make a few cards and then move on.
I recently purchased a couple 6x6 paper pads during an Echo Park sale and found a couple more at a scrapbook yardsale. The 6x6 paper pads are overflowing their storage bin. Now I'm on a mission to use up supplies that I have in my craft room and started by pulling out any partially used 6x6 paper pads.
I decided to tackle the Colorbok Carnival paper pad which I've had for years. I think it may have been the first 6x6 paper pad I purchased over 15 years ago. To be fair, it was a 100 sheet paper pad and I had used it multiple times when I just needed a little project to get me in the crafting mood.
For all of the cards, I focused on layouts which used large pieces of printed paper as focal panels. I also tried to use paper from the paper pad for the backgrounds if possible. I made multiple cards using each layout, changing the printed paper depending on what was left of the paper pad.
For this card I used one of my favorite prints, the butterflies, as the focal panel and a multi-color chevron print for the background. I was able to use a scrap piece of yellow paper, also from this paper pad, for the small panel below the butterflies.
To complete the card I added an aqua ribbon around the top of the card and a simple "hello" sentiment.
The next card featured a fun polka dot background and a diagonal stripe for the large fishtailed banner across the card. The same yellow cardstock was used for all of the matting and the paper embellishments (scallop strip across the banner and small fishtail banner).
Keeping with the fun feel of the card I stamped a simple "Yay!" sentiment using a teal ink. A few yellow Queen and Co. bubbles completed the card.
I really liked the graphic print paper with all of the colorful triangles but wasn't sure what to pair it with. Which is probably why there were several pieces of it left. I decided to use solid color textured cardstock for the backgrounds, pulling coordinating colors from my cardstock scrap bin. For the vertical panel I used several smaller scrap pieces from the paper pad.
A few more Queen and Co. yellow bubbles and a "Happy Birthday!" sentiment completed the card.
This card featured more of the graphic print and polka dot papers. Both are busy prints. To tone down some of the "busy" a couple pieces of solid color cardstock were added along the top of the card, one featuring a large scallop border.
To separate the cardstock strips I wrapped a thin yellow ribbon around the card a couple times and tied a small bow. For the sentiment I used a Queen and Co. die set and cut out the word "hello" 3 times stacking them to give the sentiment dimension.
I'm not sure if I've used this layout before, but I really liked it. I kept it simple only using 1 pattern paper for the 2 panels but I think it would also work well using 2 different prints. I still had several sheets of the cloud print and used that for the background.
For embellishment I added several brads to the 2 panels. The "just for you" sentiment is stamped using teal ink.
The cards are all bright and happy. My biggest challenge was finding cardstock in my stash that coordinated with the colors in the paper pad. I liked all of the cards and think they will be perfect to donate. And... I finished up the paper pad. YAY!
I'm trying to work my way through my collection of Echo Park and Carta Bella Collection Kits. I purchased a few several years ago at a scrapbook show and have been "collecting" them ever since. They all have 12 double sided 12x12 sheets of paper and a sticker sheet. I picked up the Carta Bella Rustic Elegance kit since it had a wedding theme. I don't make a lot of wedding cards but it's an occasion I don't have paper for and figured the kit would last a while and maybe some of the papers could be used for other occasions or general sentiment cards. In fact, none of these cards are actually wedding cards.
The first card features a strip of pink and green floral paper with a polka dot lattice background. The floral strip is matted with a scalloped glitter cardstock created using a Fiskars border punch and a green Love from Lizi pin stripe peel-off. The sentiment is from the Stampendous! From My Heart set and is stamped with Momento Bamboo Leaves ink. The card was looking a bit flat so I added a trio of green paper flowers using pink mini brads for the centers. It creates some texture but keeps the card flat enough to be mailed without extra postage.
This card uses some of my favorite papers from the kit - the green/white damask and the watercolor flowers. The flower print is quite large but the focal panel is big enough to accomodate most of a flower and some leaves. Based on the last card I knew I'd want to add some texture and the pink chiffon ribbon was a perfect match. For even more texture I added a few Nuvo Jewel Drops in the Strawberry color. The sentiment is from the same stamp set and uses the same Memento ink.
The last card uses a mason jar and floral chevron print. The scallop border uses more of the glitter cardstock and another Fiskars border punch. Instead of ribbon I used 3 matte finish aqua blue buttons for texture. The sentiment is also from the From My Heart set and is stamped with Momento London Fog ink. It's gray but picks ups the blue in the matting and mason jar paper.
I made multiples of each card - some for my antique booth and the rest to donate. I still have several full sheets and scraps so I'll be able to pull it out again when I want/need to make some wedding specific cards.
